Gregori Maiofis was born in 1970 in St. Petersburg, Russia the third generation of famous
artists; his grandmother and grandfather were among the
creators of Stalinist classicism architecture. His father, Mikhail Maiofis, is a representative of
the Leningrad school in graphic arts and a well-known Russian graphic artist and book illustrator. Gregory Maiofis studied the classical tradition of drawing and painting in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts but since 2000 has worked largely in photography. Beginning in 2004 he has practiced
alternative printing processes and is one of the few artists attempting to renew the bromoil process. Today he shares his time between Los Angeles and St. Petersburg.
