Jaroslav Vávra / 60’s in Czech
Olomouc, Czech Republic photographer Jaroslav Vávra (1920-1981) was a founding member of the DOFO photographers group, the first group of creative photographers in post-Stalin Czechoslovakia. Vávra played an important role in the history of Czech photography of the second half of the 20th century, and was among the prominent pioneers of nude photography in the country through the 1960’s. Yet today his work as a whole has almost fallen into oblivion. As a result most of his photographs have been scattered into private collections and little has been published regarding his life.
The majority of Vavra’s works were created in a period regarded as one of the highlights of Czechoslovakian avant-garde photography, and he was heavily influenced by the aesthetics of pop and op-art styles prevalent in the West through the 60’s and 70’s.
