George Grie was born Юрий Грибановский (Yuri Gribanovsky) in Omsk, Siberia (CCCP) in 1962. In 1985 he
graduated from the State University with a BA of Fine Arts
and Applied Design education. 
From the onset of his professional
career it was obvious that the Soviet art styles adopted by many
of his peers would never be his path; instead, he chose to
explore a more complicated and demanding style of neo-surrealistic painting.

His relatively short painting career (1985-1995) brought
considerable success, with shows in several European
capitals such as London, Stockholm, St-Petersburg, and Helsinki. In
the 1990s George lived and worked in St. Petersburg, Russia where he was an active member of the “Pushkinskaya 10” art collective;  an
abandoned house on Pushkin Street where independent artists, musicians
and other figures of the underground culture settled. There he met many
well-known later artists and musicians such as Sergey Kuryokhin, Yuri
Shevchuk, and Boris Grebenshchikov.

Grie made a dramatic change after moving to Toronto, Canada and
studying modern digital art techniques. He became a
professional multimedia graphic designer and joined the IBM Corporation
as a lead new media specialist. His prime interest shifted to
contemporary 3D modeling software and their applications. Combining his previous fine-art experience and classical
painting education with the new digital projects became both realistic
and fulfilling. His latest digital neo-surrealistic artworks employ a
vast array of extraordinarily photo-realistic visual records of his
conceptual thoughts, philosophic views, fantasies, and dreams.
