“A self-taught artist living in Virginia”, David MacDowell incorporates media, culture and social themes into satirical paintings. Some have called his work a virtual “Disneyland on acid”. MacDowell takes the things that resonate with our
society and turns them into art that we can both relate to and
laugh at; a commentary on our obsession with both
pop culture and the way information is spread in a digital world.
Like pop itself, the work is not particularly deep. “The Dude” figures predominantly. But forcing people to think has made very few artists popular or economically feasible; MacDowell’s work has come of age alongside the internet, and to quote from an interview with Sour Harvest:
“ I started doing cultural parody and celebrity satire, and they blew up
all over the Internet. I was too poor to get prints made, so I kept
giving people what they wanted more of. People kept requesting intricate
pop-culture scenes, and twisted movie themes, and I kept painting them,
and they have all gone on to happy homes.“
